When do you need so a landlord confirmation?
If you have just moved into a new apartment, then you must submit a confirmation of housing to the residents’ registration office or the citizens’ registration office within 14 days. So there is a reporting requirement. If you permanently leave your old address and move somewhere else, then by law you are required to register at that new address.
Do you then also need to certify the move out? no A few years ago, there was an obligation to report both moving in and moving out, so today only moving in has to be reported. An exception to this is the Moving abroad. If you want to deregister in Germany, then you also need a confirmation of the move from the landlord.
Caution: Sensitive penalties are threatened without confirmation from the landlord
The landlord confirmation was actually introduced as a means of fighting crime. The main tenant cannot register with a specific address without this document. He needs explicit permission and confirmation from the landlord that he can and will live in the apartment. The landlord has the obligation to inform the authorities about the current occupant. In this way he can assure the authorities that it is not a bogus address.
Danger! In the event of late re-registration, incomplete or incorrectly filled out forms and bogus registrations, landlords face fines of €1000 to €50,000. If you have not received the confirmation from the landlord in time, you must notify the registration office.
