Have you just moved to a community or city? Then you are obliged to register your new place of residence at the residents' registration office (also known as the citizens' office or district office) or to notify them of your new address. There apply 2 exceptions to the obligation to register:

  • You are already registered in Germany and have not been moving into your apartment for longer than 6 months.
  • You live abroad and will not move into your apartment in Germany for longer than 3 months.

You usually have to do that 7 to 14 days time. If you miss the deadline, you will have to pay a fine unless you can explain the delay and provide proof, such as a passport. B. present a medical certificate.
